A Guide to the Measurement of Windows and Doorways

Accurate measurement is an essential element in the process of selecting the most practical and cost effective way of covering a window or doorway. There are a number of factors to take into account and the most obvious ones are indicated in the following guide. If you have any queries relating to the best ways of measuring a particular window then refer to our ‘Contact Us’ page and get in touch, we’ll be happy to help you.

Internal Fitting

Take measurements horizontally at the top, middle and bottom of the window or door reveal and take the smallest dimension.

Similarly take the left, centre and right hand vertical measurements and take the smallest dimension.

Check that the window/door sides and top are vertical and horizontal respectively. If they are not, take account of this when submitting the final measurement.

Always use a steel tape measure rather than a fabric one (they tend to stretch).

Things to look out for!

Handles take up space at the back of the window/door space so make sure that there is enough room to fit the blind/curtain without it fouling when it is operated. Click on the Product Information tab for headrail and track dimensions.

Some doors and windows open inwards and there is seldom space in the reveal to allow fitting of a blind or curtain track. Make sure you can still open the window/door once a blind or curtain is fitted.

If fitting to a door or window that opens inwards against a wall, ensure there is enough space to accommodate the blind and still allow it to open fully.

External Fitting

Position the top of the blind or track at least 100mm above the window or door reveal to allow for the face fixing brackets.

The overlap on either side of the window should be the same wherever possible.

Check that the window/door sides and top are vertical and horizontal respectively. If they are not, take account of this when submitting the final measurement.

Always use a steel tape measure rather than a fabric one (they tend to stretch).

Things to look out for!

If fitting close to wardrobe doors make sure they can still be opened once the blind or curtain track is installed.

Some doors and windows open inwards so make sure you can still open the them once a blind or curtain track is fitted.

Check that cable runs for light switches and sockets will not interfere with the positioning of support brackets.

(Note: with the exception of roller blinds most products can be supplied with alternative brackets.)

WHAT WE DO WITH YOUR INFORMATION

When you give us RECESS sizes

Depending on the product we deduct a certain amount from the width to allow for the fitting of the support brackets and allow for clearance to ensure the blind operates correctly without touching the sides.

The drop measurement is used in different ways on different products.

When you give us EXTERNAL sizes.

For roller blinds this means that the external size you give us will be the finished FABRIC size

For all other products the external size you give us will be the maximum finished width of the product.
